A patent is a legal right granted by the government to an inventor, giving them exclusive rights to their invention for a limited period of time. This means that the inventor has the sole authority to make, use, and sell the invention, preventing others from doing so without permission.

A patent protects an invention by providing the inventor with the legal right to exclude others from making, using, selling, or importing the patented invention without their permission. There are three main types of patents: utility patents, design patents, and plant patents. Plant patents are granted for new and distinct varieties of plants that have been asexually reproduced.

The duration of a patent varies depending on the type of patent granted. Utility patents typically last for 20 years from the date of filing, while design patents have a term of 15 years from the date of grant. Plant patents, on the other hand, have a duration of 20 years from the filing date.

Obtaining a patent for an invention provides several benefits, including legal protection against unauthorized use or exploitation of the invention, the ability to license or sell the patent rights for financial gain, and the opportunity to establish a competitive advantage in the marketplace by being the sole provider of the patented invention.
